Jane Gibson and William Coates in the parish registers

Jane Gibson was the older sister of my 5 x great grandmother Elizabeth Holdsworth nee Gibson, and the eldest surviving child of my 6 x great grandparents, John Gibson and Mary Greene. Jane was born at Tower Hill and christened on New Year’s Day, 1731, at the parish church of St Botolph, Aldgate.

As I noted last week, the discovery of the 1788 will of Mary Gibson nee Greene has provided us with Jane’s married name – Coates – which in turn enabled me to find details of her marriage and children. Thanks to Essex Archives Online, I’ve now tracked down the records for Jane’s marriage and her children’s baptisms.

Jane Gibson married William Coates on 18 November 1752 at the parish church of St Michael, Theydon Mount. The record is interesting because it’s the only one I’ve found, so far, in which the Gibsons’ country property at Waltham Abbey – Woodredon House – is mentioned:

I’ve been unable to find out much about William, except that, according to one source, there was a house in the village in the mid-eighteenth century known as ‘Cotes’, which might have been his family home. I’m not sure if William and Jane lived in Theydon Mount after their marriage: certainly, all three of their children (William, John and Jane) were christened at the parish church in nearby Epping.
