Charles Edward’s second son Joseph John Robb was born in 1880. The 1901 census has Joseph Robb, aged 21, a law stationer, described as a ‘visitor’ in the home of William and Edith Leighton at 3 Bromley Street, Stepney. Both the occupation and the location are strong clues that this is Charles’ and Louisa’s son. But there’s an additional clue in William Leighton’s occupation: he’s described as an ‘Evangelist (Wesleyan)’. Was Joseph simply an overnight visitor with family friends and fellow Methodists (perhaps known to Charles from his time as housekeeper at the Mission?), or was he lodging with them while he worked in a law stationer’s office in the City?
