In an earlier post I noted that George Robb (b.1806) and family were living on the interest of their money at Little Friday Hill in Chingford, Essex, in 1861. They were no longer there ten years later: the house was then occupied by a Swiss banker and his family and servants.

It took me a while to find the Robbs in 1871, as the census record mis-spells their name as ‘Rob’. However, I eventually tracked them down living at White House in the village of Great Bromley, near Colchester, Essex. George, 65, is still living on ‘income from dividends’. With him are his wife Jane, 57, and daughter Penelope, 21, together with a cook and a housemaid. Their other children – George and Jane – are no longer living with their parents.
