In the previous post I mentioned that James Robb of Bruckhills was a witness in 1761 to the baptism of John, son of the late John Raeburn and his wife Elizabeth. I’ve been able to link John and Elizabeth to the couple mentioned on a tombstone in Auchterless kirkyard, mentioned in an earlier post. It reads:

Erected by Eliz Joass in memory of her husband John Reburn, farmer in bog of Badenscotch d 13 Feb 1761 aged 30, and two of his sons.

In the Old Parish Registers I’ve found confirmation that John Raeburn of Auchterless married Elizabeth Joss of Monquhiter on New Year’s Day 1754.

If the memorial inscription is to be believed , then John was born in 1731 and married Elizabeth when he was 23 years old. I’ve yet to find any record of a John Raeburn being born in Auchterless at around the right date, despite trying various permutations of his surname.

This John would have been 16 in 1747 when he’s mentioned as a witness to the birth of James Robb’s first son John. My current theory is that John was the brother of the Barbara Raeburn who married james Robb and also of the Mary Raeburn who married Alexander Robb.
