A couple more photographs from my Auntie Grace’s album (see last post), this time of my Grandad, Arthur Ernest Robb. He was born in Whitechapel in 1897, the youngest son of Charles Edward Robb and Louisa Bowman. At the time of the 1911 census, when he was 14, Arthur was living at home in East Ham and working as a brass finisher’s apprentice for the Patent Lighting Company.

The first picture is of my Grandad in his army uniform. During the First World War he served in the Labour Corps of the Royal Fusiliers, first in France and then guarding prisoners of war in England. When this photo was taken, he would have been about 20 years old:

In 1920 Arthur Robb married Mary Emily Elizabeth (‘Polly’) Webb, who was born in 1898 in Mile End, the daughter of George Webb and Mary French. Their first daughter, Grace Mary Emily, was born in the following year. This photograph is captioned ‘Arthur and Mary Robb with Grace on the roof of the Methodist chapel 1922’. My grandparents would have been in their late twenties:
