Yesterday I reported new evidence that my great-great-great-great-grandfather, James Blanch (1754 – 1840) was the son-in-law of William Barlow (died 1779), a patten maker of Compton Street, Soho. More details of William Barlow’s life, family and social status can be found in his will, a copy of which has been sent to me by my fellow-researcher Jan Addison, and which I’ve now transcribed.
I reproduce my transcription of William Barlow’s will below: as usual, I’ve retained the original spellings, punctuation and grammar. In the next post, I’ll share my thoughts about the will and the light it throws on my ancestors’ lives.

i found your posting very interesting, i personally was hoping to find out more of castle bear hill and particularly the two houses i.eThe Tors and The Grange as i used to live in the little cottage on corner of Castlebar Rd and St Stephens Rd from 1946 to 1956, if you have any info i would be grateful if you would let me know, thankyou david prescott.

David, thank you for your comment. I’m afraid I don’t have any more information about Castle Bear / Bar, beyond what I’ve posted already. If you have any useful information about the area and its history, I’d be very interested to hear from you.
Best wishes
Martin

I COULDN’T BELIEVE MY EYES SEEING THAT SNIPPET OF MAP,OF CASTLE BEAR HILL! I WAS BORN AND GREW UP THERE ! Have you visited it, i was born 1946 (the area was then called Castlebar hill) and lived in a little cottage that was for the carriage maintenance and stableman.I moved in 1957, and i used to walk down that road (castlebar rd) every day to Haven Green to Christchurch school. Most of “the hill” was then owned by the Daws family and my mum used to cook there, they also owned a lot of properties in the city. In fact at one point they wanted to adopt me as they had no heir. I also had a brother in law who worked in Wardour street for many years (now deceased). There is a nice church in the corner of Trafalgar Square ,St Martins in the Fields have been there several times beautiful brickwork vaulted ceilings in the crypt there is a cafe and shop down there.I can try to upload a map of that same area, a little more recent that i was looking at only yesterday, this is pretty spooky but i have had many many coincidences like this. For instance just one of them , i owned a green Norton M50 single cylinder and wrote it off in pouring rain at the bottom of Argyle rd on May 4th 1965, and a green Bsa 250 single that i wrote off on May 4th 1966 in pouring rain again, then was run off the road by a logging truck on rt 3 in Virginia again on MAY 4TH !! about 9 years back,NOT SURE IS THAT MY LUCKIEST OR UNLUCKIEST DAY def’ the 1st one. The Daws’ house was called The Grange and there were fetes held in the summer usually opened by a film star Anthony Steele one year Phyllis Cavert another time, i used to have the run of the big house so very different from our little cottage, in fact i have recently written a book called The Bronze Dolphin and the cover has a picture of the house from the 50s, i am not pushing it you can see it on Amazon books without buying , although it is easy little read and fiction but the basics of my growing up there are same. So Castlebar Rd runs down right hand side to Haven Green (a horse trough still there) bottom of prop’ St Stephen’s Avenue joins CB and runs to the left to ST.Stephen’s church, the road on the right running East is Montpelier Avenue, Cleveland Road is at the top, i used to chat with wounded worldwar 2 vets’ there, every time i go back i visit the Records Office in Kew to do research on my family who came from Sunderland ( i was the only Southerner at the time) Can talk more if you wish, David
