Jean Robb, born in about 1810, was the daughter of George Robb (b. 1769) and Penelope Thomson.  In 1830 she married Archibald Graham Lang, who was born in about 1800. The 1830 Post Office Directory for Glasgow has Archibald working at Wighton, Gray & Co., 221 Buchanan Street, Glasgow.

The record of the marriage describes Archibald as a ‘merchant residing in Glasgow’ and Jean as the daughter of the late George Robb, merchant, ‘residing in Blythwood Hill’.

The 1851 census has the family living at 20 Elinbank (?) Crescent, Glasgow. Archibald, who is 50, is described as a ‘merchant foreign trade’. Jean is 41. Their children are David (born 1831), Penelope M. (1833), Archibald G., (1835), Jean, (1839), Helen (1842), Elizabeth (1846) and William (1848). There are also a nursery maid and two other servants living with the family.

In 1861 we find Archibald and Jean living at 172 Woodland Road, in the parish of Milton, Glasgow. Archibald, now 61, is described as an insurance agent. Penelope, Jean, Helen, Elizabeth and William, together with two servants, are also living at the same address.
