I’ve obtained a copy of the certificate for my great great grandfather William Robb’s second marriage, to Marianne Mansfield Palmer, on 5th June 1854. The ceremony took place in the parish church of St. Clement Danes. William, age 40, is described as a widower and his profession as clerk to a stationer. His place of residence is given (curiously) as St. George the Martyr. His father, Charles Edward Stuart Robb (who had died the previous year) is described simply as a ‘gentleman’. Mary Anne Mansfield Palmer (as her name is given on the certificate) was a 23 year old spinster, living at 25 Houghton Street (then, as now, not far from the church of St. Clement Danes). Her father was Enoch Palmer, a bookbinder. The witnesses were Enoch Palmer and Martha Tunstall Palmer, Marianne’s older sister.
